Workshop: Introduction to Modern Road Safety Audits

Wednesday 4/23, 2:00 – 4:00 PM

Road Safety Audits are formal examinations of safety performance of an existing or future facility as conducted by an independent, multidisciplinary team of transportation professionals, who focus on actions to improve safety for all roadway users. Oftentimes, road safety audits are conducted at existing locations of concern, involving a myriad of professionals, but project and resource constraints, limitations in funding and schedules, and even report writing, in addition to other factors can impact the process. Conducting modern road safety audits not just at existing locations, but also for projects in the design process and throughout a lifecycle, can help to implement the Safe System Approach, foster a growing safety culture, and support an organization’s mission and efforts to save lives on our nation’s surface transportation system.

This workshop will provide an introduction to modern road safety audits, discuss the current state of the practice, present an overview of the road safety audit process and considerations to improve upon traditional practices, and identify additional tools, methods, resources, and available training.

David A. Petrucci, Jr., P.E., PTOE, RSP2I is a Senior Safety Engineer and member of the Safety and Design Technical Service Team in the Federal Highway Administration’s Resource Center. Mr. Petrucci has over 20 years of experience in consulting and government while specializing in intersection and roadway safety and design.  Mr. Petrucci has served as a member of the FHWA Safety Culture and Safe System Cross-Office Working Group, the Intersection Safety Roadmap team, and the FHWA EDC Data-Driven Safety Analysis (DDSA) effort.  He provides technical assistance, training, and technology deployment to state, local, and tribal governments throughout the United States and currently leads his team’s work on road safety audits and assessments.

US Naval Academy Walking Tour

Wednesday 4/23, 1:15 – 4:00 PM

Take a 90-minute walking tour of the historic United States Naval Academy (USNA) with fellow attendees, led by a knowledgeable tour guide from the Academy! As the undergraduate college of our country’s naval service, the Naval Academy prepares young men and women to become professional officers of competence, character, and compassion in the U.S. Navy and Marine Corps. Naval Academy students are midshipmen on active duty in the U.S. Navy.

They attend the academy for four years, graduating with bachelor of science degrees and commissions as ensigns in the Navy or second lieutenants in the Marine Corps. Naval Academy graduates serve at least five years in the Navy or Marine Corps.

As the tour is on an active military installation, all tour attendees will be required to provide photo identification and pass through airport-style security. Non U.S. Citizens are welcome but are required to bring their passport.

A group will meet in the lobby and walk from the hotel at 1:15 PM. Alternatively, you are welcome to meet the group at the Visitor Center, just after security.  Our tour starts at 2:00pm. Note paid parking near the USNA is in downtown Annapolis.
