Workshop: Multimodal Design in Action

Wednesday 4/23, 2:00 – 4:00 PM

This workshop will provide attendees with opportunities to apply the MUTCD, 11th Edition and PROWAG to actual and conceptual design projects at locations throughout the Mid-Colonial District. As part of this proposed workshop, the session would start off with a short overview of: work zones concepts, the MUTCD, and requirements affiliated with PROWAG. After the short presentation, participants will then be assigned to a table with rolls plots of various locations. The participants will design, with pens and markers, two scenarios: (1) signal operations and associated signage along protected bike lanes and (2) Roadway reconstruction along an arterial with high pedestrian volumes, sidewalk, and bus stops. Groups would be provided with applicable references to guide their design. After design, the groups will reconvene and discuss their design and its challenges, followed by a closing presentation.

Will Cowan, PE, PTOE, is a graduate of the University of Pittsburgh, is a senior traffic engineer located in Philadelphia. While he has experience in many facets of transportation engineering, he’s specifically passionate about incorporating multimodal analysis and design in all of his projects. US Naval Academy Walking Tour

Wednesday 4/23, 1:15 – 4:00 PM

Take a 90-minute walking tour of the historic United States Naval Academy (USNA) with fellow attendees, led by a knowledgeable tour guide from the Academy! As the undergraduate college of our country’s naval service, the Naval Academy prepares young men and women to become professional officers of competence, character, and compassion in the U.S. Navy and Marine Corps. Naval Academy students are midshipmen on active duty in the U.S. Navy.

They attend the academy for four years, graduating with bachelor of science degrees and commissions as ensigns in the Navy or second lieutenants in the Marine Corps. Naval Academy graduates serve at least five years in the Navy or Marine Corps.

As the tour is on an active military installation, all tour attendees will be required to provide photo identification and pass through airport-style security. Non U.S. Citizens are welcome but are required to bring their passport.

A group will meet in the lobby and walk from the hotel at 1:15 PM. Alternatively, you are welcome to meet the group at the Visitor Center, just after security.  Our tour starts at 2:00pm. Note paid parking near the USNA is in downtown Annapolis.
